There is currently a debate taking place in our country pertaining to the English language.  The United States does not have an official language but many feel that it should be put into law.

Watch this video.  When you have finished watching it, click the link titled "Immigrants should learn English" and read the article.  After reading, answer the questions in the form of a comment.

What are your thoughts on this discussion?  Is a language what holds a country together?  Is it possible for a bilingual country to work?  Do you agree with Havovi or Jacob?  Why or why not?

English is the most spoken language in the U.S, thus, ability to speak in English must be required to get U.S citizenship, or people have to speak some basic English at least.

I think that what they are saying does't make any sense. Bilingual country could definitely exist, and people who don't speak english could bring positive effect to the country. Therefore, i oppose the argument that english should be essential to the immigrants.

Do you know how many immigrants who did not learn English as their first language? There are a lot. Some of them use English really fluently, however some of them do not know anything about Englsih. However all of them get along well in the U.S, even they do not know English. Learning English is not mendatory for the U.S immigrants

I think that it is necessary for immigrants coming to the United States to speak English, because they can communicate and understand better with the common language. Also they can benefit from social services and be protected by the laws made for immigrants.
